Description ▾
Velociraptor lived across central Asia during the Late Cretaceous, roughly 75 to 71 million years ago. Despite its reputation — inflated considerably by cinema — the real animal was the size of a large turkey, weighing around 15–20 kg and standing less than a metre at the hip. What it lacked in bulk it made up for in precision: quill knobs preserved on its forelimb fossils confirmed in 2007 that Velociraptor was feathered, and would have resembled an elongated, long-tailed bird of prey rather than a scaled theropod. Its most distinctive feature was the sickle-shaped claw on the second toe of each foot — up to 6.5 cm along its outer edge — used not for slashing but for stabbing and hooking, pinning prey much as a modern eagle does with its talons. A famous specimen from Mongolia preserves a Velociraptor and a Protoceratops locked in combat, frozen mid-struggle in a desert sandstorm 75 million years ago.
This articulated skeleton is designed by Pinkywings and printed here in totem carving stone filament — a warm, layered blend of stone whites, tans, and dark browns that gives the model a natural, carved quality. Every joint moves freely, from the jaws and neck through to the long counterbalancing tail. Stocked at approximately 18–20 cm nose to tail.
