How We 3D Print Articulated Flexi Dragons — Inside the UK Workshop

Mystmere Forge · · 6 minute read

People ask us all the time: how are flexi dragons made? And it’s a fair question — because a fully articulated 3D printed dragon that moves like a real creature, with dozens of jointed segments all printed in one piece, feels a little like magic the first time you hold one.

It’s not magic. It’s careful engineering, good filament, and a lot of hours in a UK workshop. Here’s exactly how it works.

What Makes a Flexi Dragon “Articulated”?

An articulated 3D printed dragon — sometimes called a flexi dragon — is printed entirely in one piece using a technique called print-in-place. The joints are designed directly into the model: as the printer lays down each layer, it creates ball-and-socket connections between each body segment. No glue, no assembly. When the print finishes, the dragon is already connected — you just need to free the joints.

The magic of print-in-place is in the tolerances. The gap between the ball and socket is measured in fractions of a millimetre. Too tight and the joint never moves. Too loose and it flops. Getting it right requires precise printer calibration, good quality filament, and a model designed by someone who actually understands how these joints behave at scale.

The Filament

We print in PLA — a plant-derived bioplastic that gives us the colour range and fine detail we need. Each dragon can contain two or more colours, which means mid-print filament changes. For our crystal dragons, we sometimes do multiple swaps to get the gradient effects right.

Filament quality matters more than most people realise. Inconsistent diameter causes under-extrusion; moisture uptake makes prints brittle. We store all filament in sealed, desiccated conditions and run test prints when switching to a new batch.

The Print Itself

A medium-sized flexi dragon takes 8–14 hours to print. A larger piece can take 20+ hours. We run multiple printers, but we never stack jobs at the expense of quality. Every layer matters for articulation.

Temperature matters too. We tune the print bed and hotend temperatures for each model. The difference of five degrees can affect how cleanly the joints separate later. Layer height, print speed, cooling — everything is dialled in per design.

Freeing the Joints

When a dragon comes off the printer, it doesn’t move yet. The joints have fused slightly from the heat and pressure of printing. This is where hand-finishing begins.

We free every joint by hand — gently working each segment until it moves smoothly. This takes time. For a large dragon with 50+ segments, it can take an hour or more. You feel the moment each joint releases: a small click, and then the dragon begins to live.

This step is what separates a hand-finished UK 3D printed dragon from a raw print shipped straight off the bed. Raw prints have stiff, uneven joints. A properly finished dragon feels fluid from the first touch.

Quality Check

Every dragon is inspected before it ships. We check every joint for full range of movement, look for layer adhesion issues, and examine the surface detail. Any dragon that doesn’t meet the standard gets reprinted.

We also check the name and personality card is correct. Every Mystmere Forge dragon ships with its own character — Floreth the Cherry Blossom Dragon, Frost the Ice Dragon. They are not products. They are characters, with histories. The card goes in the box.

From a UK Workshop

Everything is made here, in the UK. We are a small business — the kind where the person printing your dragon is the same person who packs it and writes the shipping label. That proximity matters to us. It means we catch things that a larger operation would miss, and it means that when we say hand-finished, we mean it literally.

If you want to know more about any specific dragon — how it was designed, what filament we used, what the finishing process involved — drop us a message. We love talking about this stuff.
