How Our Dragons Are Made: Behind the Scenes at Mystmere Forge
Mystmere Forge · · 5 minute read
Every dragon that leaves the Mystmere Forge has a story—not just the backstory we write for them, but the journey from digital design to your hands. Here’s how we bring these creatures to life.
The Design Process
We work with talented designers who specialise in articulated print-in-place models. Each design is carefully chosen for how well it moves, how satisfying it feels to fidget with, and of course, how magnificent it looks.
Not every design makes the cut. We test dozens of models before selecting the ones worthy of the Forge. The joints need to move smoothly, the proportions need to feel right, and the overall aesthetic needs to capture that sense of wonder.
3D Printing
Our dragons are printed in PLA, a plant-based plastic that’s durable, safe, and produces beautiful results. Each dragon takes anywhere from 8 to 20 hours to print, depending on size and complexity.
We run multiple printers around the clock, but we never rush. Print quality matters more than speed. Every layer needs to be perfect for those articulated joints to move smoothly.
The Hand-Finishing Process
This is where Mystmere Forge dragons become something special.
When a dragon comes off the printer, it’s not quite ready. Support structures need removing, joints need freeing, and every segment needs checking. We go through each dragon by hand, ensuring every joint moves freely and smoothly.
This hand-finishing is what separates our dragons from mass-produced alternatives. It takes time—sometimes an hour or more per dragon—but the result is worth it.
Naming and Backstories
Here’s something we love doing: every dragon gets a name and personality. It might sound whimsical, but it makes each piece unique. When you receive Ember the fire drake or Mistral the wind serpent, you’re not just getting a figurine—you’re adopting a character.
From Forge to Doorstep
Once a dragon passes inspection, we package it carefully for its journey to you. We use recyclable materials where possible, and include a card with your dragon’s name and story.
Every dragon is shipped via Royal Mail from our UK workshop, so you can track its journey home.
That’s the Mystmere Forge process—part technology, part craftsmanship, all passion. We hope you love your dragons as much as we love making them.
