The Complete Guide to Articulated 3D Printed Dragons
Mystmere Forge · · 6 minute read
Articulated dragons have taken the collectibles world by storm. These mesmerising creatures flex, coil, and pose in ways that bring them to life. But what exactly are they, and what should you look for? Let’s dive in.
What is an Articulated Dragon?
An articulated dragon is a 3D printed figure with multiple jointed segments that allow it to move and flex. Unlike static figurines, these dragons can coil around your hand, wrap around objects, or simply be endlessly fidgeted with.
The magic is in the print-in-place joints—the dragon is printed as a single piece with ball-and-socket joints already connected. No assembly required.
Types of Articulated Dragons
Crystal Dragons
Perhaps the most popular style, crystal dragons feature geometric, faceted scales that catch the light beautifully. They typically have a serpentine body with dozens of segments.
Traditional Dragons
Four-legged dragons with wings, closer to Western dragon mythology. These often have fewer articulation points but more dramatic poses.
Wyverns
Two-legged dragons where the wings double as front limbs. A classic fantasy look with good articulation.
Serpents and Wyrms
Legless, snake-like dragons that are all about the flex. These often have the most segments and the most satisfying fidget factor.
What to Look For When Buying
Print Quality
Look for smooth layer lines and clean details. Poor quality prints have visible ridges, rough surfaces, and joints that catch or stick.
Joint Movement
Joints should move smoothly without excessive force. They should also hold poses without flopping. This balance is crucial and often comes down to post-processing.
Hand-Finished vs Raw
Raw prints straight off the printer often have tight joints and rough spots. Hand-finished dragons (like ours) have joints that have been freed and tested, making them move beautifully from day one.
Material
PLA is the standard and works well. It’s durable, safe, and takes colour beautifully. Some makers use PETG or resin for different properties.
Caring for Your Dragon
Cleaning: A soft brush or damp cloth works well. Avoid submerging in water.
Joints: If joints become stiff, gentle movement usually frees them. Avoid forcing.
Display: Keep away from direct sunlight for extended periods, as PLA can warp in heat.
Handling: These are meant to be touched! Regular handling actually keeps joints moving smoothly.
